I want you to do something right now before this video goes any further. Open your 401k account on your phone. Go to your account holdings. Find the column that shows the expense ratio for each fund you own. Look at those numbers.
Because here is what almost nobody in the financial services industry will tell you clearly. The money in your 401k is being charged a percentage of its total value every single year. Not a flat fee. Not a one-time fee. A percentage. Every year. Whether your investments go up or down. Whether the market crashes or booms. The fee comes out.
The Department of Labor has calculated that a one percentage point difference in fees over a lifetime of saving reduces your retirement account balance by approximately twenty eight percent. If you would otherwise retire with one million dollars and your fees are one percentage point higher than they need to be you retire with approximately seven hundred and twenty thousand dollars instead. You gave two hundred and eighty thousand dollars to Wall Street in fees that you probably did not know you were paying.
This is the video that explains where your 401k money is actually going — and what to do about it this week.
