Richie Hawtin, born in 1970 in Banbury, England, moved to Windsor, Canada, at the age of nine. Growing up a few kilometres from Detroit, he was exposed to the first wave of techno through artists such as Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and Jeff Mills, while his father, a robotics engineer at General Motors, introduced him to electronic music including Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream. Hawtin began DJing in the late 1980s and in 1989–1990, together with John Acquaviva, founded Plus 8 Records, one of the most influential techno labels of the 1990s. During the early 1990s, Hawtin released music under several aliases including F.U.S.E., Circuit Breaker, Concept 1 and Plastikman. Among these projects, Plastikman, launched in 1993, became his most influential and recognised artistic identity. Plastikman represented a new interpretation of techno, built from a minimal number of elements: drum machines, acid basslines, long spaces, repetition and subtle sound variations. Hawtin developed a sound that became fundamental to the evolution of minimal techno and acid techno. In 1998, Hawtin founded M_nus (Minus), a label that became one of the central platforms of the international minimal techno movement during the 2000s. Richie Hawtin's contribution extends beyond music into technology. Throughout his career he has consistently explored new tools for DJing and live performance. He was among the early adopters and developers of digital DJ systems such as Final Scratch, which combined traditional turntables with digital audio files, influencing the transition from vinyl-only DJing to digital performance. He also played an important role in the development and use of Ableton Live, loop-based performance techniques and hybrid DJ/live sets. Through projects such as CNTRL, ENTER. Ibiza, Plastikman Live and collaborations with software developers, Hawtin continued exploring the relationship between sound, visuals, technology and audience interaction. Applications such as Synk and the work of his company Liine reflected this interest in connecting performance technology and electronic music culture. Richie Hawtin is still active today still being one of the most influential techno artist of all time and for electronic scene in general by providing a very distinctive sound and contributing to develop new technologies. Sónar is an international festival of electronic music, creativity and technology held annually in Barcelona, Spain. Founded in 1994 by Ricard Robles, Enric Palau and Sergi Caballero, it is widely regarded as one of the most influential electronic music festivals in the world and one of the events that helped establish Barcelona as a global capital of electronic culture. The first edition took place in June 1994 under the name Festival of Advanced Music and Multimedia Art. From the very beginning, Sónar was conceived as much more than a music festival, combining electronic music with multimedia art, audiovisual experimentation, digital culture and technological innovation. This multidisciplinary approach distinguished it from traditional dance music festivals and became one of its defining characteristics. One of Sónar's most distinctive features has always been its dual format: Sónar by Day and Sónar by Night. The daytime programme traditionally focused on experimental performances, live acts, exhibitions, conferences and emerging artists, while the nighttime programme showcased internationally renowned DJs and large-scale electronic music performances. In 2013, the organisers launched Sónar+D, a parallel programme dedicated to creativity, technology and innovation. Bringing together musicians, artists, designers, researchers, developers and technology companies, Sónar+D expanded the festival's cultural scope and reinforced its position as one of the world's leading events exploring the relationship between music, art and digital technology.
