What does leadership look like when there is no perfect roadmap—and the unexpected becomes part of the job? In this episode of The Educator Experience Podcast, Salli Carter sits down with Dr. Bill Shiell, former President of Northern Seminary and Senior Strategist with BrightDot Fundraising Advisors, to talk about leadership, fundraising, failure, hope, and navigating uncertainty in higher education. Bill has spent more than 25 years helping organizations and institutions navigate challenge and change. During his presidency at Northern Seminary, he reinvented the educational model, sold the institution’s 28-acre campus, launched an on-demand training platform, increased enrolment during the COVID-19 pandemic, and helped raise more than $21 million for operations and new initiatives. But some of his biggest leadership lessons came from what he couldn’t plan for. Just 60 days into his presidency, Bill discovered the institution had run out of liquidity to pay its bills. In this conversation, he shares how experiences like this changed the way he thinks about strategic planning, adaptability, failure, and what it actually means to lead. We also explore a side of higher education that doesn’t always get much attention: fundraising. Bill shares what donors are looking for, why understanding the problem they care about matters, and why hope can be such a powerful part of an institution’s story. And then there’s “losership.” It’s Bill’s term for something we don’t talk about nearly enough in leadership: loss, failure, humility, experimentation, and getting back up. Rather than treating those experiences as evidence that leadership has gone wrong, what if they’re actually part of becoming a better leader? In this conversation: What happens when strategic plans meet reality Leading through uncertainty and institutional change Fundraising and donor relationships in higher education Why donors respond to hope Making room for experimentation and intelligent failure Bill’s concept of “losership” Why leaders need values that ground them Building flexibility into institutional planning Why your career may be more like a portfolio than a ladder Finding opportunity in unexpected moments Earlier this year, Salli also had the pleasure of sitting down with Bill’s colleague at BrightDot, Bill Crouch, for another conversation about fundraising, leadership, and higher education. These two conversations complement each other incredibly well. ▶️ Watch the conversation with Bill Crouch:    • Reflections of a College President with Bi...   Connect Dr. Bill Shiell / BrightDot Fundraising Advisors: www.thebrightdot.com The Educator Experience: www.theeducatorexperience.ca Subscribe to The Educator Experience for conversations about teaching, learning, leadership, professional growth, and the experiences shaping education. #highereducation #HigherEdLeadership #educationalleadership #fundraising #TheEducatorExperience
