Scientists have formally named around 2 million species on Earth — but estimates for how many actually exist range from 8 million to over 1 trillion, depending on what you count. In this video, we look at why so much of life on this planet is still undiscovered: species sitting unnamed in museum drawers, entire ecosystems of tube worms and glowing creatures found only decades ago on the deep seafloor, the thousands of microbes and tiny creatures living in a single handful of soil, and "cryptic species" — animals that look identical to a species we already know, but turn out to be something else entirely once you check their DNA.
By the end, you'll see why "we've found it all" is one of the most confidently wrong assumptions people make about the natural world.
