Algebra 2 | Polynomial Long Division
How do you divide a polynomial by a binomial using long division?
In this clip from Infinity’s Saturday Morning Math Help Live, Caitlyn works through two Algebra 2 polynomial division problems:
(2x³ + 5x² - 3x + 6) ÷ (x + 2)
and
(3x³ - 4x² + 7x - 5) ÷ (x - 2)
Mr. Bru explains how to:
• Set up polynomial long division correctly
• Divide the leading terms
• Multiply the divisor by each new quotient term
• Subtract carefully and bring down the next term
• Repeat the process until the degree of the remainder is smaller than the divisor
• Write a final answer that includes a remainder
For the first problem:
2x² + x - 5 + 16/(x + 2)
For the second problem:
3x² + 2x + 11 + 17/(x - 2)
Polynomial long division follows the same basic cycle as ordinary long division: divide, multiply, subtract, and bring down.
