The 2019 Hyundai Veloster N represents the moment Hyundai transformed the quirky Veloster from an unconventional sporty hatchback into a genuinely serious performance machine. Developed under Hyundai's newly established N performance division, the Veloster N was engineered around the idea that a practical front-wheel-drive hatchback could deliver the excitement, aggression, and driver involvement normally associated with established European and Japanese performance brands. It was also the first Hyundai N model introduced to the U.S. market, bringing Hyundai's motorsport-inspired engineering to American roads. At first glance, the Veloster N looks dramatically more aggressive than an ordinary Veloster. The unusual three-door hatchback body remains, but nearly every exterior detail has been given a performance-oriented makeover. The front end features a large black grille, enlarged lower openings, aggressive aerodynamic surfaces, and N-specific detailing designed to improve cooling and airflow. The sharp headlights give the car a focused expression, while the lower front bumper incorporates the signature N performance red accents that continue along the side skirts and lower bodywork. At the rear, a prominent roof spoiler, aggressive diffuser treatment, and dual exhaust outlets complete the transformation. The example shown here has a Performance Blue exterior, contrasted by black wheels, dark trim, and the characteristic red N accents. The combination gives the Veloster N a distinctive appearance without losing the unusual personality that made the Veloster recognizable in the first place. Under the hood is where the Veloster N truly separates itself from the regular Veloster lineup. Power comes from a 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct-injected four-cylinder engine. In standard form, it produces 250 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, while the available Performance Package raises output to 275 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, with the same 260 lb-ft of torque available from 1,450 to 4,700 rpm. And unlike many modern performance cars, the 2019 Veloster N was offered exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission. The short-throw gearbox features rev-matching technology for smoother downshifts, while the engine's turbocharged torque gives the little hatchback a strong punch throughout the rev range. The Performance Package also brought a shorter final-drive ratio, helping make the car even more responsive when accelerating out of corners. The Performance Package turns the Veloster N into an even more serious driver's car. It adds an electronically controlled limited-slip differential, larger brakes, 19-inch wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires, and a variable sport exhaust system. These upgrades aren't simply cosmetic; they give the front-wheel-drive chassis substantially more ability to put its power down while improving braking and cornering performance. The chassis itself was developed with serious performance driving in mind. The Veloster N uses MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link independent rear suspension, along with electronically controlled dampers and reinforced body structure. The driver can select between several driving modes, including Eco, Normal, Sport, N, and N Custom. N Custom allows individual performance characteristics such as suspension, steering, throttle response, rev matching, differential behavior, stability control, and exhaust sound to be adjusted independently. Press the N button and the personality changes almost instantly. The steering becomes heavier, the suspension firms up, the throttle becomes more responsive, and the exhaust becomes substantially more vocal. Inside, Hyundai kept the cabin relatively straightforward while adding plenty of N-specific touches. The cockpit is predominantly black, with a thick leather-wrapped steering wheel, aluminum-style controls, supportive sport seats, and the distinctive N logo integrated into the steering wheel. Directly ahead of the driver is a traditional analog instrument cluster with a central information display, while the center dashboard houses an infotainment and navigation screen. The infotainment system could also display performance information such as turbo boost, torque, power, G-forces, and other driving data, turning the car into something of a rolling performance telemetry station. More importantly, the Veloster N helped establish Hyundai as a serious participant in the modern performance-car world. Its development was influenced by Hyundai's motorsport activities, including World Rally Championship and touring-car competition, while former BMW M engineering chief Albert Biermann played a major role in developing Hyundai's N performance philosophy. In short, the 2019 Veloster N is Korea's answer to the hot-hatch formula.
