From Disappointment to “Prophesy Again!” | Luke 24 & Revelation 10 (Chichewa)

What happened to the disciples after their hopes concerning Christ were shattered? And why does their experience in Luke 24 bear such a striking resemblance to the experience of the Advent believers after the disappointment of 1844? In Luke 24, the disciples had witnessed the triumphal entry of Christ and believed that He was about to establish His kingdom. But when Jesus was crucified, their expectations were crushed. On the road to Emmaus, Christ met two disappointed disciples and opened the Scriptures to them, showing them that the Messiah had to suffer before entering into His glory. The experience of the early disciples has a remarkable counterpart in the Advent movement. William Miller and his associates proclaimed the soon return of Christ after studying the prophecies of Scripture. When Christ did not return as they expected, they experienced a bitter disappointment. Yet the disappointment did not mean that God's prophetic Word had failed. Instead, the believers went back to the Bible. Through earnest prayer and Bible study, greater light began to shine upon the prophetic Scriptures. The parallel becomes especially significant in Revelation 10. After the little book is eaten and becomes bitter in the believer's experience, John is told: “You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, languages, and kings.” The disciples went from Emmaus back to Jerusalem to proclaim that Christ had risen. The Advent believers went back to the Scriptures and discovered that they still had a prophetic mission. This video explores the parallels between Luke 24:13–48 and Revelation 10, the experience of William Miller and the Advent believers, and the prophetic significance of the disappointment. The message is especially relevant to Seventh-day Adventists today: We must not abandon the prophetic Word because of misunderstanding. We must go back to the Scriptures. We must trust the sure word of prophecy. And we must remember the command: *PROPHESY AGAIN.* The experience of the disciples and the Advent movement reminds us that a misunderstanding of prophecy does not mean that God's prophecy has failed. Sometimes disappointment becomes the doorway to deeper understanding and a clearer mission.
