Nasser El Sonbaty: The Bodybuilder Who Almost Beat Dorian Yates | 1997 Mr. Olympia Nasser El Sonbaty was one of the most impressive bodybuilders of the 1990s — but despite his massive physique, incredible symmetry, and multiple Olympia appearances, he never won the Mr. Olympia title. Known as “The Professor,” Nasser had a unique background. He studied history, political science, and sociology while building his bodybuilding career, eventually becoming one of the biggest names in professional bodybuilding. But everything changed at the 1997 Mr. Olympia. Standing against six-time champion Dorian Yates, Nasser brought one of the most memorable physiques of his career. He ultimately finished second, while Dorian won his sixth consecutive Mr. Olympia title. Nasser later expressed his belief that he deserved a higher placing, making the 1997 Olympia one of the most debated contests of his career. But his story didn’t end there. He went on to win the 1999 Arnold Classic, compete against legends such as Dorian Yates, Kevin Levrone, Shawn Ray, Flex Wheeler and Ronnie Coleman, and remain one of the most recognizable physiques of his generation. This is the story of Nasser El Sonbaty — The Professor, the giant from Germany, and the bodybuilder who came incredibly close to becoming Mr. Olympia.
