Action learning helps people tackle significant workplace problems while developing their skills through the experience. This lesson explains how the approach combines programmed knowledge with insightful questioning, enabling groups to challenge assumptions, explore alternatives and make better decisions. You’ll explore its three foundations: collaborative problem-solving, iterative learning and learning through real work rather than imaginary case studies. The lesson then outlines a practical process, from forming a diverse group of four to eight people and selecting a suitable challenge, to using reflective questioning, facilitation, workplace testing and feedback. It also considers the benefits for individuals, teams and organisations, including stronger problem analysis, communication, accountability and innovation. Importantly, action learning requires protected time, trust, resources and careful attention to group dynamics. The session concludes with a useful takeaway: identify a workplace challenge that resists a quick fix and consider whether repeated questioning, action, feedback and reflection could help.
