*DCS World | F/A-18C Ship Strike | AGM-65 Maverick Attack & Fuel Emergency*
An early-morning strike mission over the Sinai with **Lieutenant Gator (GATOR)**, tasked with attacking an enemy naval target using the **AGM-65 Maverick infrared missile**.
We departed from our airbase in the Sinai and headed towards the target area, maintaining our tactical formation and preparing for the ship attack. Once within weapons range, we employed the IR Mavericks against the enemy vessel, successfully completing the primary objective before turning for home.
But the mission was far from over.
On the way back, we encountered enemy air resistance in the form of the infamous *MiG-28s* — the fictional fighters made famous by *Top Gun*, represented in DCS by aircraft painted in the distinctive black scheme.
What followed was an unexpected air-to-air engagement. We managed to deal with the opposing fighters, but the engagement came at a cost.
During the fight, one of the enemy aircraft managed to put rounds into my aircraft, damaging the fuel system and causing a significant fuel leak. With the fuel quantity steadily decreasing, the priority changed from simply returning to base to **managing the remaining fuel and getting the aircraft safely on the ground**.
By carefully configuring the fuel tank transfer system and managing the remaining fuel, I was able to slow the loss and preserve enough fuel to continue the flight.
Rather than risk running completely dry while attempting to return to our original base, I diverted to an **alternate airfield**.
After a long flight watching the fuel quantity disappear, I finally managed to get the Hornet safely on deck at the alternate — bringing an already eventful mission to a successful conclusion.
Mission: Ship Strike
Aircraft: F/A-18C Hornet
Weapons: AGM-65 Maverick IR
Wingman: Lt. Gator
Map: Sinai
Opposition: MiG-28
Outcome: Target destroyed • Air threats defeated • Fuel emergency • Safe landing at alternate
This is what makes DCS so immersive: a mission can change completely in seconds, and getting the aircraft home can become just as important as completing the original objective.
