Before the 1950s, the term Muay Thai did not exist. Even the term Muay Boran had not yet been applied. Instead, it was simply known as Muay which was a broad term used for unarmed fighting practices across Thailand. It was only later, as Muay became standardised and organised into a regulated sport, that the name Muay Thai came into common use. At the same time, the older, pre-sport practices of Muay were retrospectively grouped under the label Muay Boran.
