Lily is you/us/everyone. When I first paid close attention to these lyrics I was deeply moved because the story isn't about a little girl at all, it's about people growing up sheltered and protected from the evil in this world. This "girl" is a representation of us all growing up and wanting to explore and see the world only to try new things. But then we get enticed with our relationships, or drugs, or just about anything that we all know we shouldn't be doing because we "let them in". The morale of the story, to me, is about learning from your mistakes, being grateful and content about what you have in life, and cultivating resistance to giving in to the everyday demons in your life that come in different forms and ways.
