The Bible also records that Jephthah attempted diplomacy before war, that the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, that he made a vow before fighting Ammon, that the LORD gave him victory, and that his only daughter was the first person to come from his house when he returned. The exact fate of Jephthah’s daughter remains debated. One interpretation understands Judges 11 as describing a literal human sacrifice. Another argues that she was permanently dedicated to God and remained unmarried and childless. The repeated emphasis on her virginity, the wording of the vow, the annual remembrance, and the wider biblical prohibition of human sacrifice are all part of this debate. What the text makes much clearer is that God never commanded Jephthah to make the vow. The Spirit of the LORD had already come upon him before the vow, and the narrative does not present his promise as the price required for victory.
