How Concerned Should we be About North Korea; What Kind of a Threat Does Kim Jong Un Pose to Asia and the US (Dealing with Tensions in the West Pacific). The host for this show was Jay Fidell. The guest was Cheehyung Harrison Kim.
The discussion was: North Korea and Tensions in the West Pacific. North Korea isn't a distant worry anymore. It's an established nuclear power that keeps testing new weapons.
On October 3, Pyongyang said it fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile that could dodge defenses. South Korea's military said it flew more than 700 kilometres. That came less than two weeks after a test of what looked like a hypersonic weapon.
How many warheads does it have? Estimates vary widely. A Stockholm think tank puts it at about 60. South Korea's defense minister says 80 to 120.
The bigger change is Russia. North Korea has sent an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 troops to fight for Moscow and taken about 6,000 casualties. Its soldiers are getting real combat experience, and it may be getting Russian technology in return. President Zelenskyy says another 10,000 may be on the way.
Diplomacy is stalled. President Trump wants to meet Kim, but Kim is done talking about denuclearization.
For Hawaii, this hits close to home. Pyongyang's missiles could reach U.S. bases and Pacific islands.
The takeaway was: Take North Korea seriously, but don't panic. It is now an established nuclear power, testing faster and smarter weapons designed to beat missile defenses.
Watch the Russia connection. Combat experience and possible Russian technology could make Pyongyang more capable and more confident.
Don't expect a quick diplomatic fix. Kim has taken denuclearization off the table, so the realistic goal is managing risk, not ending it.
