Does Edgerunners 2 lack depth? Or do you just want to be unhappy?
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, the most anticipated anime of 2026, released to mixed reviews. Following four characters this time, D, Roman, Talia, and Weak, rather than just one in David Martinez, the cyberpunk anime didn't have as much time per character, and as such the motivations fell much more flat, their personal relation to the villain, Night City, much less personal, leading to less to analyze and explain. All four seem to fix their issues on a whim: D chases Capri, Talia decided to live, Weak to help her, and Roman to keep filming, all going against the popular quote that "There are no happy endings in Night City." Was this happy ending indicative of a lack of depth, or was that quick nature of their decisions trying to explain a metanarrative point about David and Lucy's story, what we missed four years ago? Do we, the crucial audience, desire the cruelty of Night City? The anime analyzes us: why do we want to be unhappy?
