The people who build these things used to call them non-lethal. They do not anymore.
Here is how one United States patent explains it, in the background section where a company describes its own field: less-than-lethal is the preferred term rather than non-lethal, because no projectile weapon of this kind is entirely foolproof, and unintended deaths have been known to occur.
That is the industry describing itself. And the medical literature is why — decades of systematic reviews documenting skull and facial fractures, ruptured eyes, permanent blindness, penetrating wounds, and deaths.
There really is a whole category of weapon that ships to your door with no permit, no background check, and no waiting period. That much is true. So which of them actually solves the problem of a man in your hallway at three in the morning?
In this one: what sixteen joules looks like next to a nine millimeter's five hundred. Why a rubber ball and a pepper round work on completely opposite principles, and which one does not care how tough the man is. The problem with compressed gas that no advertisement raises. Why the voltage number on a stun gun box is decoration. Why the legality claim is actually three separate questions people run together — and which one decides whether you go to prison. What the "every twenty-six seconds" figure actually counts. And why the biggest, most powerful item on these lists is the worst possible choice for a house.
Then at the end, the one thing in this whole category that genuinely earns its place. It is the cheapest and least impressive-looking item available, and nobody makes a video ranking it.
I am not an attorney and nothing here is legal advice. Air guns, stun devices and launchers are regulated differently in different states and cities, and possession law tells you nothing about use law. Read your own statutes and speak with a lawyer in your county.
