In the South Veluwe watershed in the Netherlands, the SoilValues Community of Practice is exploring how a stronger connection between people, their land and their shared history can inspire more sustainable ways of living and farming. By bringing together residents, local producers and people already working to care for the area, the initiative aims to foster a culture of care for both the community and the natural environment.
In this video, participants explain how understanding the watershed’s landscape, history and water systems can help people reconnect with the place they call home. Through shared experiences and local initiatives, they are also exploring ways to strengthen the regional economy. Although the area has many organic and agroecological producers, more value could be created locally by developing products such as soft drinks, energy bars and cosmetics, while supporting practices such as agroforestry that benefit the soil.
Recognised as the Netherlands’ first official bioregion, South Veluwe is committed to increasing the market for organic products and encouraging more local consumption. The initiative shows how community engagement, regional cooperation and care for the land can reinforce one another.
🎥 Watch this video to discover how the Dutch Community of Practice is connecting local history, community action and agroecological production to build a more resilient bioregion.
