Lesson 90: Wisdom Comes from Reflection
Experience alone does not necessarily produce wisdom.
A person can repeat the same actions for many years without learning from them. What transforms experience into knowledge is reflection.
After a project, a design critique, a teaching experience, or even a failure, we have an opportunity to ask: What happened? Why did it happen? What did I assume? What did I overlook? What would I do differently?
Reflection creates distance between an experience and our immediate reaction to it. It allows us to recognize patterns that are difficult to perceive while we are immersed in the situation itself.
This is why I believe teaching architecture has been such a valuable experience for me. Every studio, every student, every critique, and every project has offered an opportunity for reflection, not only on architecture, but also on how we teach and how we learn.
Wisdom is not simply the accumulation of experiences; it is experience examined, questioned, and understood.
Perhaps the most important habit an architect can develop is the habit of looking back, not with regret, but with curiosity.
Lesson: Experience gives us stories and encounters, but reflection transforms them into wisdom.
