I Keep Decluttering... So WHY Does the Clutter Keep Coming Back? | Realistic Home

I keep decluttering our house... so why does the clutter always seem to come back? 😅 Over the last few weeks I've been trying to approach our home a little differently. Instead of looking around, feeling overwhelmed and thinking I need to declutter EVERYTHING, I'm starting to look at individual areas and ask what the actual problem is. And today I've realised that not all clutter happens for the same reason. I'm starting with our fireplace, where things have simply accumulated over time. Then I'm tackling the boxes above Rose's wardrobe — a storage system that worked brilliantly when it was just for one child, but hasn't really grown with our family. And finally... I'm confronting our bags for life. All 28 of them. 😂 Some things genuinely need decluttering. Some need a better system. Some have simply ended up living in the wrong place. And apparently some things need to be put in the boot of my car so I actually remember to use them! I'm also making sure everything we're letting go of actually leaves our living spaces — including finally emptying the charity box in the hallway and getting everything into the car ready to donate. I'm slowly realising that if I want our home to become easier to manage, I can't just keep tidying the same things away. I need to understand why the clutter keeps coming back in the first place.
