What happens to antennas, radio units, baseband equipment and other cell-site hardware when a mobile network upgrades? Retired network equipment can follow several routes. Operators may redeploy useful hardware elsewhere in their own networks, keep it for legacy spares, sell it through asset-recovery companies and telecom brokers, refurbish it for secondary-market buyers, or recycle equipment that no longer has enough demand or usable life. In this video, we follow cell-tower equipment after decommissioning and explore how age, technology generation, vendor support, condition, compatibility, removal costs and market demand decide whether a piece of telecom hardware gets a second life or is dismantled for materials.
