Mahalunge Residents Protest Civic Neglect, Demand Action
Mahalunge residents took to the streets on Saturday, August 22, protesting the alleged apathy of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Traffic Police towards worsening civic and road-safety issues.
Residents highlighted roads riddled with potholes, craters and uneven surfaces, inadequate street lighting, absence of proper drainage, speeding RMC trucks and construction dumpers operating beyond permissible hours.
The protest followed the tragic death of an 11-year-old boy, who was crushed under a dumper truck after the two-wheeler on which he was travelling with his father and a relative skidded on a wet, slushy road at night. Residents said accidents have become frequent due to the dangerous road conditions.
Traffic Police officials assured the protesters that strict action would be taken against RMC trucks and dumpers violating traffic regulations, including action against drivers found driving under the influence of alcohol.
In a significant development, three PMC officials submitted a signed written assurance that repair and resurfacing work on the 3.5-kilometre stretch would begin from October 1, 2026. While Rs 5 crore has been allocated, PMC officials said the actual requirement is around Rs 20 crore.
The residents now want one thing: assurance must translate into action. Their key question remains—will PMC honour its written commitment, and if not, what will be the next course of action?
