A swan was seen during rush hour on the central reservation of the 70mph A14 near Godmanchester - just inches from the fast lane.
Multiple people called and I immediately set off and contacted the Highways Agency so that the Police could assist in stopping the traffic. When I arrived the swan was laying down with an obviously injured wing near to a service slip so I could park in safety. It was a nail biting 20 minutes before the Police arrived and as I approached I could see the public began to help, firstly a lorry stopped and waved me over and the central lane stopped too - a quick check for motorbikes and I headed straight to the swan, netted him, waved my thanks and got off the road.
I don't believe he was hit by a car but possibly hit the central reservation with his wing as the radius/ulna section just before the wrist had snapped, but cleanly. Within an hour of the first call he received pain relief and his wing was set in a thermal plastic cast and wrapped to the body to immobilise it.
Running a sanctuary means we do not have to get them to be releasable - but to the best outcome possible. He'll not fly with an imperfect wing but if it's fused sufficiently then he doesn't need surgery to remove the broken section. If the union fails then surgery can be considered. Fortunately this swan did mend and he lives amongst many of his own kind within our 5.5 acres.
