A metal detectorist searching legally near Wesseling, Germany, began finding Roman silver coins one after another. After recovering 15 coins and realizing the signal continued, he stopped and contacted the archaeological authorities.
The excavation revealed **934 Roman silver denarii weighing about 3.1 kilograms**. The oldest coin dates to **148 BC**, while the youngest was minted in **AD 124/125**, during the reign of Emperor Hadrian. Most of the coins date to the Flavian period, AD 69–96.
Archaeologists believe the fortune was probably accumulated around AD 100 and deliberately buried later, during Hadrian’s reign. Part of the hoard was recovered as an intact block of soil; X-ray analysis revealed fragments of a ceramic container and traces interpreted as straw, suggesting the coins had been carefully packed for storage.
Why was the money never recovered? That remains unknown. Safekeeping is considered a likely reason for burial, and one possibility is that the owner died before revealing the hiding place.
The scale was enormous. According to the LVR, an ordinary legionary earning about 300 denarii per year, with roughly half withheld for food and equipment, would have needed around six years of disposable income to accumulate a comparable sum.
