The rules of exponents make sense. 3^-1=1/3 and x^-1=1/x but f^-1 doesn't mean 1/f f^-f is one of the most problematic math notations or one of the most disliked math notations. f^-1 actually means the inverse of the function f. We use this notation a lot, especially for trigonometric functions. For example, tan^-1(x) means the inverse tangent, or we can also write it as arctan(x). BUT!!!
