A Farmhouse Holding the Last of the Light | Let the Ache Loosen with Sunset Birdsong & Breeze

It's an old wraparound thing along the side of a white farmhouse, clapboard still warm from a whole day of July, and it faces west the way these New England places always seem to, like somebody a hundred summers ago wanted exactly this and built the house around the wanting. The last warm hour. Nowhere you have to be inside it. The hydrangeas have gotten out of hand. Blue going soft to cream along the railing, each head the size of both your hands. Hollyhocks lean in from the garden taller than you are, and past them the wheat field tilts down toward the water, half of it cut already, the hay left standing in those loose gold rounds nobody ever bothers to explain. A rail fence going silver. The maple older than the house, dropping its shade clear across the lawn. And under all of it the lake, gone the colour of the inside of a peach, the sun resting on the far shore like it has all evening and knows it. You're not in any hurry either. That's the part that surprises you. There's still birdsong up in the maple, thinner now as the light thins, sunset birds that don't stop so much as lose the thread of what they were saying. A gentle breeze comes up off the wheat, moves through the hollyhocks and the loose bits of your hair, and keeps going without you. Somewhere low in the grass a cricket starts. Then a second one further out, the two of them working the evening out between them. No music anywhere. No one calling your name. Just the field and the water and the golden hour coming quietly apart at the far end of the countryside. Here's the thing about a farmhouse at sunset that nobody warns you about. You come out to watch the light go and lose the whole evening to it. The strange relief of having nowhere else to be settles into you like heat coming off the clapboard, and whatever you carried out here with you, whatever it was, just stops mattering for a while. So stay. The sun is still an hour off the water. The porch is yours as long as the light holds, and the light is in no rush, and for once you aren't either. Ambience Planet and Ambiance Planet.
