Kiviõli is a small industrial town in Ida-Viru County, historically shaped by oil shale mining and processing. The town’s name also reflects this connection, as Kiviõli literally means “stone oil” in Estonian. This walk takes place in two areas: in the town center and also a little further away from it. The central square was renovated a few years ago and has been put in order, although compared with similar urban renewal projects in other Estonian towns, the result feels rather modest. We also walked away from the immediate town center to include some of the few surviving pre-Second World War buildings, including the functionalist style community house and the former cinema building.
