The Real Reason Houses Got So Expensive

In 1949, a brand new house in Levittown cost $7,990. Today the typical new home costs almost five years of income. Wall Street, interest rates and greedy builders all get the blame, but the real story is simpler and harder to fix: after 2008 America stopped building homes, and in the places with the most jobs it quietly became illegal to catch up. We follow the price of a house all the way down, past the mortgage, past the builder, to the land under it and the rules written on top of that land.
