Where did prehistoric humans actually sleep?
Caves are the obvious answer — but they were only part of the story.
Prehistoric humans also slept beneath rock shelters, inside simple temporary shelters, and on bedding made from grass, plants, and possibly animal hides.
Archaeological discoveries from places such as Border Cave and Sibudu in South Africa suggest that ancient humans were already deliberately changing their sleeping environments tens of thousands — and in some cases hundreds of thousands — of years ago.
In this video, we explore how prehistoric humans dealt with cold ground, insects, predators, fire, winter weather, temporary camps, and the challenge of falling asleep in a world without houses, mattresses, locks, or electricity.
And perhaps the most important part of a prehistoric sleeping place wasn't the cave, the fire, or the bed.
It was the other humans around you.
