Canada artificial island port: Ottawa is about to build Roberts Bank Terminal 2 off Vancouver. Keel North asks if it could steal America’s ships.
Washington has spent two years calling Canada the 51st state. Canada’s answer is a Canada artificial island port at Roberts Bank, south of Vancouver: about 100 hectares of new land poured into open sea, three berths and room for 2.4 million more twenty-foot containers a year. From there, trains run straight to Chicago, letting cargo for the American heartland skip Los Angeles and Seattle.
In this documentary, Keel North follows the money, the politics and the mud. We look at why the Port of Vancouver, which moved a record 170.4 million tonnes in 2025, says it will run out of room within a decade. We cover the ten-year environmental review, the 627-page panel report, the rival Deltaport 4 plan from GCT, and the 2023 approval with 370 conditions. Then the trade war gives the island a new job: Ottawa picks builder TerraMarine, sends the project to the Major Projects Office, and Prime Minister Mark Carney pledges more than C$10 billion to grow exports away from the United States.
We also show how Canada already takes American cargo. A 2012 US Federal Maritime Commission study, the Harbor Maintenance Tax, Prince Rupert’s new CANXPORT terminal, and the 2023 strike that sent US-bound boxes back home. Finally, the part most videos skip: western sandpipers that lick biofilm off the mud, 76 southern resident killer whales, a Federal Court fight, and a final permit due in October 2026.
Is the Canada artificial island port a weapon against America, or insurance against it? We run the numbers, including how many Vancouver rail containers actually cross into the United States, and close with a Reality Scorecard on schedule, cost and risk.
