Tribe live at SABC Studio Cape Town 2001

TRIBE — Live at the SABC, Cape Town A rare early recording of the legendary South African jazz band Tribe, captured live at the SABC in Cape Town around 2000/2001, when the band had only just begun. This was approximately one of our first few gigs together — raw, young, searching, and full of fire. Tribe was: Buddy Wells — saxophone Mark Fransman — piano Charles Lazar — double bass Kesivan Naidoo — drums At the time, I was only 21 years old. This recording happened through the kind generosity of Pete Robson, the Director, who gave us the opportunity to document the band at such an early stage. The sound engineer was Rob Nel, who I later went on to form the band Golliwog with. Our manager Rafiq Asmal produced the recording. Back then, there was no luxury of endless editing or fixing things afterwards. The performance was recorded to tape, edited live, and mixed live by Pete Robson and Rob Nel. What you hear is the band in the moment. Tribe became an important part of South African jazz history and influenced many musicians who came after us. I am grateful that this document exists, and proud to share it.
