Palmyra, once one of the ancient world’s most significant cultural centres, was badly damaged during Syria’s war, when ISIL fighters destroyed several of its temples and the city changed hands repeatedly between government and opposition forces. About 90 percent of the modern town was damaged or destroyed, and local officials say only 30,000 to 40,000 people now live there. Tourism, once drawing 150,000 visitors a month, is slowly recovering, offering hope for the town’s shattered economy. Al Jazeera’s Bernard Smith reports from Palmyra, Syria.
