In Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, paediatrician Dr. T.M. Manickaraj and his wife Nagarathinam transformed their 23-acre farm after moving away from chemical-intensive agriculture and adopting Subhash Palekar Natural Farming methods.
After spending more time on the farm, Dr. Manickaraj experienced persistent health problems that he associated with exposure to chemical sprays. At the same time, Nagarathinam began learning about organic and natural farming through pioneers including Subhash Palekar and G. Nammalvar. Together, these experiences changed the way they thought about farming, food and the health of their soil.
Today, their farm in Dheenampalayam, Coimbatore, follows natural and integrated farming practices including mulching, Jeevamrutham, Beejamrutham, rainwater harvesting and the recycling of organic matter back into the soil. Cows, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, fish, insects and birds all play a role in creating a more self-sustaining farm ecosystem.
The farm now grows coconuts, bananas, pomegranates, guavas, papayas, figs, lemons, star fruit, gourds, turmeric, pepper and much more. Almost everything the family eats comes from the farm, with rice being one of the few staples sourced from outside.
Their journey shows what can happen when farming works with nature rather than against it — restoring soil life, conserving water and producing food while leaving the land healthier for the next generation. Discover the story of Dr. Manickaraj and Nagarathinam and their journey into natural farming in Coimbatore through Subhash Palekar Natural Farming principles.
