Friends in this video we will discuss "Prevention of Breast Cancer" in detail. Firstly we will discuss the Risk Factors for the development of Breast cancer. These Risk factors can be divided into two categories, Non Modifiable Risk Factors, and Modifiable risk factors. Non Modifiable Risk Factors are those which can not be changed, Modifiable Risk Factors are those which can be changed by improving your daily habits and with lifestyle changes. First, we discuss the Nonmodifiable Risk Factors - 1) Being born female is a major risk factor for breast cancer. 2) As you get the older risk of breast cancer goes up. 3) Inheritance of abnormal genes like BRCA1, BRCA2, from parents increases the risk of breast cancer. 4) Family history of breast cancer in the first-degree relative (mother, sister, or daughter) with breast cancer doubles the risk for the development of breast cancer. Also, females with a father or brother who has had breast cancer also have a higher risk of breast cancer. 5) Personal History of Breast cancer - Female with breast cancer in one breast has a higher risk of developing new cancer in the other breast or in another part of the same breast. 6) Race & Ethnicity - White women are at more risk of developing breast cancer as compared to African American women. 7) Taller females have a risk of developing breast cancer as compared to shorter females. 8) Females having dense breast tissues on mammograms having higher chances of breast cancer as compared to the females having a moderate density of breast tissue. 9) Bening (Non-Cancerous) Conditions of the breast - Females having certain benign or noncancerous conditions of breast-like duct ectasia, Several Papillomas, Atypical Ductal Hyperplasia, Atypical Lobular Hyperplasia are at higher risk of developing breast cancer. 10) Females who had a history of onset of menstrual cycle before the age of 12 years are at higher risk of developing breast cancer as compared to the females who started late. 11) Females who have a history of late menopause especially after the age of 55 years are at higher of breast cancer. 12) Females who have a history of Radiation therapy to the chest wall for another cancer such as Hodgkin or Non- Hodgkin Lymphoma are at significantly higher risk of developing breast cancer. Modifiable Risk factors - These are the factors that can be changed by following healthy lifestyle practices and avoiding bad lifestyle habits. 1) Too Much alcohol consumption is a risk factor for the development of breast cancer. 2) Obesity increases the risk of breast cancer. 3) Physical inactivity - Not being physically active is a risk factor for the development of breast cancer. 4) Females who do not have children or have their first baby after 30 years of age are more likely to develop breast cancer. Having pregnancies reduces the chances of getting breast cancer. 5) Females breastfeeding are at lower risk of getting breast cancer as compared to females who have not breastfed. 6) Females who take regular oral contraceptive pills as a measure of birth control are at higher risk of developing breast cancer. 7) Females who undergo Postmenopausal hormone therapy are at higher risk of developing breast cancer. 8) Breast Implants- It has been seen that the use of breast implants has increased the risk of getting breast cancer in some of females. Steps to prevent Breast Cancer - 1) Keep Weight In check especially after menopause 2) Females who do regular exercise for more than 30 minutes a day are at lower risk of developing breast cancer as compared to the females who follow a sessile lifestyle 3) Intake of a balanced diet which includes a lot of vegetables and fruits reduces the risk of breast cancer. 4) Smoking along with breast cancer increases the risk of 15 other breast cancers, so smoking should be quit. 5) Breastfeeding of a total of one year or more, combined for all children lowers the risk of breast cancer. 6) Avoid Birth control pills particularly after the age of 35 years or if you smoke. 7) Post Menopausal hormone therapy should be avoided if possible but if it has to be taken then it should be done for the shortest possible time. 8) FDA-approved drugs "Tamoxifen & Raloxifene " can significantly reduce the chances of getting breast cancer, but they should be taken only after consulting a specialist doctor. 9) Mastectomy - Mastectomy reduces the chances of breast cancer up to 90 percent decision of the mastectomy should be taken only after consulting a specialist oncologist.
