Bramble is nine. He hunts, he patrols the garden wall, he has seen off animals
twice his size. And every evening he climbs onto my chest and pushes his front
paws in and out against my jumper like a three-week-old kitten, with his eyes
half shut, for as long as I let him.
You will have been told kneading comes from nursing — a kitten presses with
alternate front paws against the mother's belly and that pressure helps bring
the milk down. That is true, and it is the easy half. The hard half is why a
nine-year-old predator who has not needed milk since he was two months old is
still doing it at all, and doing it on a person.
Here is the answer, and it is not really about the cat. A wild cat does this
as a kitten and then stops. It is weaned, it is pushed away, it starts
hunting, and every behaviour that belonged to being fed by somebody else falls
out of use because nothing rewards it any more. Weaning in the wild is not
gentle: the mother stops lying down for them, she gets up and walks off, she
blocks them, and eventually she swats the one that keeps trying. It is an
ending, and it is meant to be.
In your house that ending never arrives. There is always a larger creature who
opens the tin, keeps the room warm and does not expect the animal to feed
itself. The role of kitten simply never closes.
And the clearest evidence is not kneading at all. It is the meow. Adult cats
barely meow at each other — they hiss, they growl, they yowl over territory —
but the meow is largely something kittens do to their mother. Your cat does it
to you, every day, for its whole life. It kept a juvenile signal and pointed
it at the only adult in the house. The purr delivered in contact, the tail
held straight up on approach, the kneading: all of them belong to the first
weeks, all of them should have faded, and all of them survive in a house cat
and get aimed at a person.
Cats moved in with us around ten thousand years ago in the Near East, around
stored grain and the rodents it attracted. Nobody set out to breed them. They
were useful, they stayed, and they have been only lightly reshaped since —
which is why so much of the animal is still wild and only this one corner of
it is not.
We also go through the second job kneading does, which is self-soothing. Watch
when it happens and you will find it is not only on quiet evenings: it turns
up in a cat moved to a new room, a cat shut out of somewhere it wants to be, a
cat on a bed in a house full of visitors. Kneading with a loose body, half-shut
eyes and ears forward is a settled animal. Kneading with a tight body, ears
turned back and the head lifted towards a door is an animal trying to settle.
Same paws, opposite situations, and the difference is never in the paws.
Also: why the claws come out and why that is not aggression; the folded towel
that solves the whole problem; and one thing in this area that has been
measured properly — in 2019 Vitale, Behnke and Udell ran cats through the
attachment test used on human infants and on dogs, and around two thirds showed
what the test calls secure attachment, close to the figures for babies and for
dogs. The bond is real and testable. What the cat believes about who you are
is still not, and I am not going to dress a guess up as a finding.
A note on health, with some weight. A cat that kneads and sucks at a jumper or
a blanket corner is, on its own, showing a habit. It becomes something else the
moment the fabric starts going in. Chewing and swallowing wool, fleece, plastic
or cables is called pica, and it is not a quirk: swallowed fabric does not
pass, it gathers and it blocks, and a blockage is surgery. That is a
conversation with your vet, not a thing to watch and hope about. I do not
diagnose and I would never ask you to guess.
Tonight, the simple one is the towel: have it ready before he arrives. The
harder one is to stop reading the kneading as a verdict on you and start
reading the rest of the animal, because that is where the information has been
sitting all along.
How old is yours, and does it still do it? Tell me in the comments, and give me
their name while you are at it. I read every single one.
