Before the dust carried the footsteps of foreign armies, it carried the names of kings. KBD#29 is a musical journey into the age of the ancient Mali Empire—a civilization of sovereigns, warriors, merchants, scholars and keepers of memory. The rhythm begins like distant movement across the Sahel. Gradually, the drums gather strength. Royal horns seem to announce the opening of the palace gates. The music rises as though a great caravan is approaching the capital beneath banners of gold, indigo and crimson. At the heart of this world stands the griot, guardian of genealogy and living memory. Through spoken history, song and praise, the deeds of ancestors pass from one generation to another.
