Oregon: The State Built by the Oregon Trail How did Oregon become a state? The answer begins long before Oregon entered the Union in 1859. For thousands of years, Indigenous nations lived across the region. Then came fur traders, missionaries, American settlers and, eventually, the enormous migration of pioneers traveling west on the Oregon Trail. Between 1840 and 1860, hundreds of thousands of emigrants traveled the 2,000-mile Oregon Trail toward the Pacific Northwest. Their arrival transformed Oregon — but it also transformed the lives and lands of the Native peoples who were already there. The Oregon Donation Land Act of 1850 encouraged even more American settlement by granting land claims to settlers. More than 2.5 million acres ultimately became the subject of claims under the legislation. Then came the political fight over statehood. Oregon's 1857 constitution contained provisions excluding Black Americans, and Oregon entered the Union on February 14, 1859, as the 33rd state. So the story of Oregon isn't simply the story of pioneers crossing the Oregon Trail. It's the story of migration, land, Native nations, exclusion, politics and the creation of a new American state.
