If you are alone in the high timber after dark and a knock comes off a tree back in the black, one hard crack and then nothing, you do not pick up a stick and answer it. Every man who ever worked this country learns that one early, and it is the smallest rule on the list.
I was born in Skamania County, Washington, and I have lived under these trees my whole life. This is the honest answer to the 6 rules the old timber men and my own people kept in Sasquatch country, from somebody who grew up in this country.
In this one you will hear why you leave a track where it lies instead of following it, why you never knock back at a knock in the dark, what that heavy musky smell on dead-still air really means and why you are already too close, why you break camp when the stones start coming down, the three places you never bed down, from a wallow to a lean of fresh-broken trees, why you never follow the thing that tries to lead you deeper, and the last piece my granddad would only say out loud in broad daylight.
Some of it I can explain down to the last detail. Some of it nobody can. You can weigh it for yourself.
If these old woods keep you listening, subscribe, and I will keep bringing you what they taught me.
Stay dry, and stay on the trail. Merle
