On May 9, 1980, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge collapsed into Tampa Bay, Florida, after a massive cargo ship struck one of its supports. Nearly 1,300 feet of roadway fell into the water, killing 35 people.
How could one ship, one storm, and one bridge pier lead to such a devastating disaster?
This documentary reconstructs the 1980 Sunshine Skyway Bridge collapse, following the M/V Summit Venture and harbor pilot John Lerro as a violent thunderstorm swept across Tampa Bay. Heavy rain overwhelmed the ship's radar, visibility dropped to almost zero, and powerful winds pushed the vessel dangerously off course.
Moments later, the ship struck a critical bridge support. A Greyhound bus, six cars, and a pickup truck plunged into the water as the bridge collapsed.
But the storm was only part of the story.
We examine the navigation decisions, missing weather warnings, structural vulnerabilities, and engineering failures that contributed to one of Florida's most tragic transportation disasters. We also explore the National Transportation Safety Board's investigation and how the lessons from this maritime disaster influenced the design of the new Sunshine Skyway Bridge, which opened in 1987.
A true story of catastrophic weather, human decisions, and the engineering lessons that changed bridge safety.
