The Bottling Plant Wrote Off 60,000 Mismatched Corks — Her Bulletin Board Line Paid Off the House
In the spring of 1987, Leona Jaeger stood in an unheated warehouse in Waverly, Iowa and pressed a handful of unsellable corks between her fingers.
The bottling plant had written off sixty thousand mismatched natural corks — 28mm, 30mm, 32mm, wrong density, wrong taper — sitting on four pallets in a secondary warehouse like a problem that had already been decided.
She had $214 in a checking account she was rationing like the last of anything. Her aged cheese logs were moving, a restaurant in Cedar Falls was calling back every week, and she had seven names on a waiting list for a product she couldn't seal properly. The wax method took 37 minutes per rack and left her hands smelling of paraffin until Tuesday.
The entire lot was $48. Sixty thousand corks for forty-eight dollars — and the men at the co-op counter said sixty thousand of anything was a lot for a fourteen-goat operation.
She had measured her molds with a caliper before she ever drove to the plant. When you already know what you make, the object doesn't have to be what it was made for — it only has to fit what you're making now. Scrap is a category. Material is a decision. The difference lives in the person doing the looking, not in the thing being looked at.
This story is drawn from a composite of small-farm production histories in the rural Midwest. Characters and events are dramatized for storytelling.
