Starting something new - Free Play Friday. Where I find an arcade game I'm interested in and play thru it.
Today we have, Street Fighter Alpha 2
Street Fighter, is a world-wide IP that had an atomic boom when Street Fighter 2 hit arcades in 1991. Street fighter originally came out in 1987, and was considered by most to be an awful game which high difficulty. But at the core of it, was a game that was high damage high reward and once you unlock the secret of how to perform special moves, it opened the game up a bit that makes it more palatable. We may play that on the channel just because. But when Street Fighter 2 came out, the whole world was trying to stay on the game as soon as possible, which lead to many knockoffs, and copy-cats. To answer back, Capcom updated the game with Champion edition, which allowed for the Boss characters to be playable and mirror matches. Turbo, which added speed and more moves to most of the cast. Super Street fighter 2, which added 4 characters, various color palettes but reduced the speed. Then Super turbo, a game that is still played today - added the speed back, added more moves and a super meter for whole playable cast. They added a mysterious character Akuma or Gouki in Japan, his intent was unknown at the time and seemed like a rumor on how to fight him. Spoiler: it was getting to the final fight with M. Bison (dictator) without continuing.
In 1995, Street Fighter alpha hit arcades, crowning a new era of Street Fighter - filling in the story after the events of the Original Street Fighter (1987). One year later - Street Fighter Alpha 2 came out and became the gold standard of the Alpha/Zero Series. Making all the secret characters from Street Fighter Alpha out right playable characters and added more secrets, which included classic SF2 versions of characters - along with inducing Evil Ryu to the world.
This game had various amounts of success and ports. Originally coming out on the Playstation one, further ports included for Street Fighter collection with the Gold variant that added even more content. Playstation 2 with the Street Fighter Alpha Collection - which also had a special version of Street Fighter Alpha 3, called Hyper Street Fighter Alpha. That version was much like Hyper SF2 - where all version of Street fighter alpha characters were playable in the SFA3 build. When's that coming back out capcom!? More ports include Street Fighter 30th anniversary collection for PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Playstation 4. Finally with the Capcom Stadium series on various consoles and playable via the Street Fighter 6 game center rotation. Still above all that - the most famous port was the SNES port, that had "loading" time between rounds. Come to find out - there was a memory leak in the coding. Emulation specialists have since fix this memory leak and it plays almost as good as the arcade version!
