The civil suit brought by "Jane Doe" against Cornell University has set off many emotions about sexual assault vs sexual choices, men's behavior, women's behavior, police response to women reporting rape and colleges ignoring sexual assault on students. It is a complicated issue that isn't just about one incident in one place, but how a society and law enforcement and our legal system deal with victims of sexual assault in schools, workplaces, Hollywood, politics, in dating situations, and when violent stranger rapes occur as well. How is the handled or mishandled? How should and do police respond? Is this always a criminal matter or can it be also a civil matter as is now occurring in the Cornell case? What are our responsibilities as male and female when it comes to sex, sexual situations, reporting and supporting? How should we as a society respond with fairness and proper legal avenues? How can we prevent people from becoming victims, either as the one who has had a sexual assault perpetrated against them or as someone accused of sexual assault without merit and evidence? And how do we move forward as a society? As a criminal profiler and as someone who has worked with sexual assault cases and understands that it is not as simple as some people think. This is not a political channel, and I hope people will do their best to keep politics out of our discussion and focus on how behavior, evidence, legal and cultural issues weave into a complex dynamic that can cause great harm in one fashion or another.
