An 80-minute walk through the historic Former French Concession in Shanghai, starting and ending at the iconic Wukang Mansion.
This video follows a large, figure-eight-esque circuit through the residential and commercial streets of the Former French Concession. The walk serves as a record of the district’s preserved heritage architecture, ranging from mid-century apartment blocks to colonial-era villas.
The route begins at the intersection of Wukang Road and Huaihai Road, featuring the 1924 Wukang Mansion (formerly the Normandie Apartments). It's one of the most iconic buildings in Shanghai, and my colleagues referred to it as China's own Flatiron Building, referencing the triangular building in New York.
The walk moves north along the length of Wukang Road before turning onto the commercial stretch of Anfu Road. From there, the path heads south down Wulumqi Road and connects to the wide, tree-lined Fuxing Road. The final third of the walk navigates the quieter residential areas of Yongfu Road, Hunan Road, and Xingguo Road, eventually returning to the starting junction at Wukang Mansion.
Established in 1849, the Former French Concession was under French administration for nearly a century, resulting in a distinct urban character that set it apart from the rest of the city, including the adjacent International Settlement. This legacy has made the FFC one of Shanghai’s most preserved heritage zones, offering a low-rise, high-density contrast to the modern development of the city's newer districts. (Compare it to my video fo Lujiazui!)
The footage was recorded in March under a flat, overcast sky. The signature London plane trees that line these streets are bare, providing an unobstructed view of the varied building facades and Art Deco details, and a slightly different portrayal of the area compared to most videos of the FFC. The atmosphere is quiet and steady, reflecting the muted lighting of a late-winter afternoon.
Filmed on Panasonic GH5S with a Leica 8-18mm lens, using a DJI Ronin RS5 stabilizer in March 2026. If you enjoyed this video, please consider supporting the channel by subscribing.
