My first time playing Ascend to ZERO! I went in knowing almost nothing about the game and spent my first session learning how the combat works, how the time-rewind mechanic works and how to actually survive. The interesting part is that you only have 30 seconds to rewind time, so every attempt teaches you something that can help you get further on the next run. The game gives you 30 seconds to manipulate time. You can't progress while time is stopped, but you can use it to look ahead, plan your next move, then continue when you're ready.
