Daniel Steinman started Old School at 22 in South Africa — a country with 40% unemployment and a minimum wage under two dollars an hour. He had no investors, no safety net, and no permission to use the logo he put on his first product. He just did it anyway. "Ask forgiveness, not permission." 500 units funded the next 500, which funded the next 500 — and he bootstrapped a premium sportswear brand to $50 million in revenue without raising a single dollar. Today Old School has 24 retail stores — 10 of them in Johannesburg, one of the most dangerous cities on Earth — with under 1% theft. He partners with Real Madrid, Barcelona, the Springboks, the NBA, and the NFL. He still won't fly business class. Every dollar goes back into the business because, as he puts it: "I'd rather invest in myself. You can't control outcomes — but you can control output." This is the story of what it actually looks like to build something massive from nothing — in a place most people would never try — and what happens when a 28-year-old from South Africa decides the US market is next. ⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻ Connect With Me! ⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻ 🎙️ Subscribe for weekly conversations with entrepreneurs who've done it the real way. 📩 Newsletter: the-next-chapter-today.beehiiv.com 💼 LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/stevejweiss 📱 TikTok: @thesteveweissjourney0 ⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻ Chapters ⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻ 0:11 What is Old School — and why does it exist 4:59 South Africa's economy: $2/hour, 40% unemployment, and die-hard fans 8:45 How Fanatics inspired a 22-year-old to build his own version 11:12 Zero to $50M bootstrapped — "ask forgiveness, not permission" 12:40 500 units funded the next 500: the cash conversion discipline 13:49 Why a $50M founder still won't fly business class 15:31 From online sales to 24 retail stores in South Africa 17:14 10 stores in Johannesburg — and under 1% theft 18:56 The Mother Teresa of retail: running stores like a military operation 22:04 Building the team: "Don't let doers set the strategy" 26:36 Coming to the US — what Old School is building next 30:05 The Six Fs: friends, family, fitness, faith, fun, finance 32:52 Persistence: "A no doesn't mean no"
