Why ship-to-ship shuttles quietly eat tanker capacity: the workaround keeps barrels moving, but it ties up more ships for longer.
Off Oman’s coast, shuttle tankers move crude through the risk corridor to safer Gulf of Oman water. A ship-to-ship transfer then hands the cargo to a larger vessel for the ocean leg. The bridge keeps flow moving. It is not free capacity: more transfers mean more ship-days tied up.
Reuters, citing Kpler, put Gulf of Oman ship-to-ship loads near 2.5 million barrels a day in September 2026, up from about 1.4 million in August—roughly 40% of Hormuz volumes near 6.5 million barrels a day. LSEG freight for a VLCC from the Gulf to China printed above $30 a barrel: more than a quarter of a roughly $105 barrel, versus 2–3% before the war.
This episode explains the mechanism, the fleet-productivity tradeoff, and why a capacity workaround can soak up tanker capacity even while the barrels still move. Kpler’s VLCC counts are scenario estimates, not a live census. The HiLo wealth transfer” line is attributed opinion, not a channel fact.

Scope / fences:
• STS is the capacity-sponge A-plot: barrels move, but ship-days and fleet intensity rise.
• Hormuz, STS, freight, and share figures are sourced chips; keep their Reuters/Kpler or LSEG attribution on-screen.
• VLCC figures such as +25 / +32 / +58 and base 36–40 are Kpler scenarios, not a live fleet census.
• The HiLo “wealth transfer” statement is attributed opinion and must stay soft; it is not a quantified market claim.
• Do not add invented day-rates/TCE, diversion percentages, or “oil vanished” language.
• Red Sea/pipeline references are route-constraint context only, not the A-plot.
• Do not redo T7’s Yanbu storage countdown; no partisan framing.
