Almost every country that finds something valuable underground ends up worse off for it. Economists call it the resource curse, and the list of countries it has ruined runs through three continents. Botswana found diamonds in 1967, one year after independence, and did the opposite: it went from among the poorest countries on Earth to upper middle income without a single coup or civil war. The arrangement that made that possible is now falling apart. I measured one thing myself before writing any of this, and the answer changed how I told the story. Botswana covers 579 149 km², slightly more than France, and holds 2.5 million people. But they are not spread out: half of everyone in Botswana lives on 0.5% of the country, and nine tenths of them on 4.3%. Ninety six per cent of Botswana holds one tenth of its people. That is not simply how southern Africa looks. I ran the same calculation for every neighbour: Zimbabwe needs 9% of its land to hold half its people, Zambia 1.5%, South Africa 1.3%. Botswana is the extreme case in its own neighbourhood, and that emptiness turns out to be part of why the country worked. ⏱ CHAPTERS 0:00 The resource curse 0:41 What I measured 1:14 The same number for the neighbours 1:44 The Kalahari 2:20 Why emptiness matters 2:40 Independence, 1966 3:21 Diamonds at Orapa 3:30 How this story usually ends 4:04 The fifty-fifty deal 4:40 Seretse Khama and the kgotla 5:30 Where the money went 6:14 The geography nobody mentions 6:48 What the success story leaves out 7:41 Lab-grown diamonds 8:33 Three things at once HOW THE MEASUREMENT WAS DONE Population and area were computed from the GHS-POP population grid (European Commission Joint Research Centre, 2020 epoch, 30 arc-second resolution) intersected with Natural Earth country polygons. The concentration figure is a direct count: grid cells sorted by population, then the share of land area needed to accumulate 50%, 80% and 90% of the people. https://human-settlement.emergency.co... https://www.naturalearthdata.com/ The same grid sums to 7.841 billion against a world population of 7.84 billion in 2020, so it is not missing anybody. The area comparison with France uses metropolitan France only, drawn at identical kilometres per pixel rather than identical degrees — a degree of longitude in France is almost a quarter shorter than one in Botswana, and comparing by degrees would have made the picture contradict its own caption.
