Why the World Cup Disappeared for 12 Years

Why was there no football World Cup in 1942 or 1946? This original illustrated explainer follows the twelve-year gap between France 1938 and Brazil 1950. We explain why World War Two interrupted the tournament, why peace in 1945 did not mean FIFA could immediately stage another World Cup, and the trophy-hiding story that FIFA recounts about Ottorino Barassi. Then we look at the tournament's return in Brazil—and why the decisive Brazil–Uruguay match in 1950 was part of a final group, not a knockout final.
