DESCRIPTION
The cold in the Boundary Waters doesn’t just freeze your skin—it gets into your bones and starts whispering.
Thomas spent twenty-two years as a search and rescue coordinator, believing he knew every predator and every danger the Minnesota wilderness could throw at him. That was until he took a job as a winter caretaker for a remote research outpost deep within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
For the first month, the silence was just part of the job. But when the temperature plummeted to forty-five below zero, the woods changed. The geometry of the forest began to warp, the radio started broadcasting his own voice back to him, and something heavy began dragging itself across the cabin roof.
This is the account of the nights Thomas spent trapped in that cabin, and why, even years later, he still refuses to open his window when the temperature drops.
