Psalms 23:4b Fearless in the Valley | “I Will Fear No Evil; For Thou Art With Me”

Psalm 23:4 — “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” The valley has not changed—but David’s response has. David does not say, “There is no evil.” He says, “I will fear no evil.” The promise of Psalm 23 is not that the child of God will never walk through dark valleys. The promise is that we never walk through them alone. In this message, we examine the powerful words: “I will fear no evil; for thou art with me.” We will consider three great truths from this verse: 1. The Bold Confession — “I Will Fear No Evil” Fear is natural, but faith is supernatural. David makes a deliberate decision: “I will.” His confidence is not based on his circumstances, his strength, or his experience. He chooses to trust God even while walking through the valley. The Christian life is not a life of denying danger. It is a life of refusing to allow fear to dominate us. “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” — Psalm 56:3 2. The Deep Reason — “For Thou Art With Me” This is the turning point of Psalm 23. Earlier David says, “He maketh… He leadeth… He restoreth…” But when he enters the valley, the pronoun changes: “Thou art with me.” The valley moves David from talking about God to talking to God. Our courage does not come from saying, “I am strong enough to handle this.” It comes from knowing, “My Shepherd is with me.” God’s answer to our fear is not always immediate deliverance from the valley. Sometimes His first promise is simply: “I will be with thee.” 3. Living Fearlessly Because the Shepherd Is With Us Fear often asks, “What if…?” Faith answers, “Thou art with me.” What if the situation gets worse? Then He will be with me there too. What if I don’t know what tomorrow holds? He will still be there tomorrow. What if I have to walk through another valley? The Shepherd will walk through it with me. Ultimately, our confidence is found in Jesus Christ—the Good Shepherd who entered the darkest valley Himself. “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.” — John 10:11 Christ faced the darkness of Calvary and endured the judgment of sin so that His sheep could have the assurance that we are never abandoned. The cross is the proof that when we enter our darkest valley, God will not abandon His sheep. So when fear comes, remember the Shepherd. When the valley gets dark, remember the Shepherd. When you cannot see what is ahead, remember the Shepherd.
