Hank and Peggy are 60, still working, give $17,000 a year to their church, and just inherited a $750,000 IRA. The 10-year rule means it all has to come out by 2036. The do-nothing plan (take the minimum, let it ride, keep writing checks) pays $610,672 of tax over those ten years, $370,953 of it in one return. The same couple, same giving, living on the inherited IRA while deferring their paychecks and bunching five years of giving into a donor-advised fund, pays $323,849. The catch: they pay more tax than the do-nothing plan from 65 to 69, and a big chunk of what they keep is still pre-tax.
Inherited IRA 10-year rule, 457(b) and 403(b) deferrals, donor-advised fund bunching, QCDs from an inherited IRA.
